Foundation grade programming Robots

Posted by Richard Callanan | Posted in ICT | Posted on November 25, 2015

Over the past few weeks the Foundation grade has been working with robots called “Beebots”.

On designated mats and eventually creating their own courses, the students have been programming robots to go from Point A to Point B. They work out how many forward spaces, which turns they have to execute, and if they need to go backwards, then set the program accordingly. Programming the robots is all about trying and trying again till your destination has been achieved.

SEL – Social Emotional Learning. Transition activities with our Buddies.

What ifThroughout this term, sessions with our Year 6 Buddies, have focused on transition.

The Foundation students are preparing to move into Year 1 as our Year 6 Buddies prepare to move into Year 7.

It is a time of huge and exciting change. Our activities have focused on ‘Looking Forward’.

Last week we read the picture storybook, ‘What If?’ by Anthony Browne. In the book Joe and his mum walk down the street talking about the party he’s going to. Joe begins to wonder what if he doesn’t know anyone or he doesn’t like the food, etc. His mum reassures him and offers suggestions to ease his anxiety.

In class, when we read the book, the Prep students were encouraged to make some, ‘What if…?’ statements about their concerns for next year. Their Yr 6 buddies offered reassurance in their responses.

Some revealing, honest and pertinent wonderings and responses were expressed and some samples are below.

Excursion to the Zoo

Last week the Foundation students went on a fabulous excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. This was to support and enhance our learning around our Science unit of Inquiry Learning, ‘I like to move it, move it’.

Each group used the ipads to investigate and record observations by taking photos  and videos related to a specific form of animal movement. We investigated walking, running, swimming, flying, hopping and climbing. We will use these observations to continue our learning back at school.

Many thanks to our supportive band of helpers. Everyone had a great day and returned feeling very happy but also very tired.
